Happy face or Sad face

After finishing The Giver, give your interpretation of the ending. Did Jonas and Gabriel make it to Elsewhere? Give evidence from the text to support your reasoning.

  2. Happy Face,
I think at the ending of "The Giver", I think Jonas and the Baby, Gabriel, made it to another town with a celebration going on. In the Book, it says that they see a house with lights in the distance and Jonas says that were here. I think that Jonas and Gabriel went to the house, asked to come in for care, and the people in that house would offer them to stay. So I say a Happy face to that book.

  3. At the end of The Giver, Jonas and Gabriel made it to Elsewhere and whiles there at that moment, the Giver dies because you can hear the echo of music that he left behind in his memory.

  4. I thought The Giver was a phenomenal novel to read. And I would love to believe that they lived and found themselves in a new world full of wonderful surprises. I sadly believe that the happy memories and the light was a symbol of death. Maybe they have passed out and still lived in this new world. Although I do know with certainty that if Jonas and Gabriel find themselves in the real world, it won't be an easy journey. I believe that since they are both capable of seeing, hearing, or any other beyond ability that their birth mother(s) are not from the dystopia community.

  6. Happy face:
I believe that Jonas and Gabriel made it to that elsewhere and are going to have a new and happy life out of the other communities. I also believe that the giver sent the echo to Jonas giving a sign to Jonas that they had did it while he slowly faded out existence.

  7. Personally, I can’t imagine that Jonas and Gabe lived. After Jonas almost giving up because he was so weak, hungry, and tired. In the end when Jonas and Gabe got to the summit, How is the sled just there? How is Jonas reliving a memory? It’s just not possible!!! Once Jonas starts sledding down the hill, the text describes how he can see all of the colorful lights. Seeing the light in other words means; seeing death. I just think it’s not possible for Jonas to live after all the stuff that have happened on his journey to “elsewhere”. I’m sorry to say, but I’m 100% sure that this is a sad face ending!!!

  8. I think the ending is a happy face. I think that Jonas and Gabriel made it to the house. And Jonas saved Gabriel and him also he saved the community by giving them the memories that he had. They made it to ''elsewhere''.So now Jonas and Gabriel will have a happy life with a new family.

I believe that in the end they make it to a small town wear there are family's and real love. You get to choose what you do with you're life and you get to choos you're own spouse. There is color and memories of the past there are family's that stick together and will always love each other till there death. The old get to stay with their family's and they get to teach the newborns about what has happened in the past and what they can do to change everyone's future. I believe that Jonas will find true love with someone and will adopt gabe as a son he will give gabe new memories and will care for him. -happy face ^ . ^

  10. At the End of the story it says that Jonas and Gabriel were going to make but then another step and BOOM! Both Jonas and Gabriel died. It might be that Jonas died because he didn't get the memory of music. So this is a Sad Face

  12. Yes I think that Gabriel & Jonas made it else where because they were walking towards the door or the lights were just a sing of death. And in the book it says the as they walked Jonas could hear the sound of music that the giver did not give to him because it was too late.

  13. Jonas and Gabriel made it to Elsewhere!!! Jonas and Gabriel did make it to Elsewhere because Jonas saw lights and heard music and saw people so he made it, he and Gabriel are still alive. There are many signs that he would have died but I think that they're still out there somewhere safe and sound. I think that they're are still alive, HAPPY FACE!!!

  14. No! Jonas and Gabriel did not make because the giver said to Jonas let me give you music Jonas said no.When Jonas and Gabriel made it to elsewhere they heard an echo of music and Jonas thinks the Giver dies all the memories are given to the people and thats why Jonas heard the music.

  15. I think it was a good thing he left the community because he saved the baby. The previous Giver died and left Jonas. But Jonas took Gabriel and left the community. It does not state what happened after that, but the author lets us have a vision of what happens at the end. So they could possibly be living a good life and a good place. And since the community got those memories they probably are living a good as well. The book had a intense but good ending.

  16. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( I interpretative that Jonas and Gabriel made it to elsewhere. They made it to heaven. Since there was light, I predict that Jonas and Gabriel made it to heaven and met met Rosemary. Probably the Giver died and the memory of soft whimsical music comes to Jonas. That was only one of the two thoughts I had in mind for the end. The second ending I had in mind is related to ¨Karma¨. Not the jinxes or whatever that is. The ancient India ¨Karma¨. ¨Karma¨ is reincarnating. Since in the book there was a girl that is a six, Katherine. I thought of Rosemary being Katherine. So Gabriel was probably the previous receiver before The Giver. So Jonas reincarnates to a new born child as the next receiver. So memory keeps going on and on.

  17. :( Face
I agree with the sad face ending. I agree with the sad face ending because they went to the light of the other community and usually that means death and passing through to "elsewhere". I also agree with it because in the beginning when Jonas had the dreams about snow he always thought he had to go some where on the sled, sadly it led him to death.
I also agree because the book states that they were waiting for Jonas and the baby, Gabe. They also heard music from behind them, people say the giver died and they heard music, but I believe the giver did die but they are also died and heard the music from where ever or what ever "elsewhere" is.

    1. What if Jonas and Gabriel mad a huge circle and are back at the same community but everyone is celebrating or they are sad, that could be why the y heard music. No one could know because through out the whole story no one went missing or died in the river. So what if they have celebrations when people go missing.

  18. I think that the giver, the baby, and Jonas should have all died because when they reached the place they did what they had to do so they fulfilled their purpose for life and they should die

I think that Jonas and Gabriel die and head to the light. I think this because in the book it says when they are on the sled they see a house with many lights through the window. I also think that the Giver dies because in the end it says that Jonas thinks he hears music coming from the place he came.

  20. Jonas and Gabriel didn't make it to Elsewhere and the reason is because maybe the music that the Giver was telling him was heard when he died. When he died be could have remember the memory of the house given by the Giver. The sled could have also been another memory and could have died before he went on the sled with Gabriel.

  21. The Giver has an ending that is unknown. Many people have different ways of it ending. I think that Jonas and Gabe died. They were cold, hungry and didn't have shelter. In the Giver it says that they heard music and some how a sled appeared at the top of the hill. I think that's symbolism of them being free and going elsewhere because they had finished their purpose in life.

  23. My interpretation of the ending is that the music Jonas heard meant that The Giver had died. I think this because The Giver didn't give Jonas the memory of music. Jonas told The Giver to keep the music to himself once he is gone. Sad Face. :(

  24. I believe that Jonas and Gabe do not make it elsewhere. I think that the happy memories represent flash backs before they die. According to chapter 23, Jonas feels that he cannot proceed to nurture Gabe. They feel extremely hungry and weak. When Jonas and Gabe hear the music I think that the author is trying to show readers that Jonas and Gabe had never had the memory of music that is the last thing they hear before they pass. Although some may not agree with this claim I believe this one........SAD FACE :(
