Compare and Contrast the stories theme and plot.

  1. The stories Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy and Confronting a Challenge have similarities and differences. A first difference is that Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy is in third person, told by a narrator. Meanwhile, Confronting a Challenge is set in first person, told by the person who had the experience. A second difference is that in Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, Turner immediately tries to help and keeps going, but is stopped for a little while, but he gets help and continues going. In Confronting a Challenge, at first the narrator doesn’t want to go on the ice. He gives up really easily twice.
Some similarities are, first, that they both got courage and actually did what they needed to. Turner got courage from the whales and the narrator in Confronting a Challenge got courage, or inspiration, from explorers called Robert Peary and Matthew Henson. He also gets courage from the figure skater on the ice. A second similarity is that they are both afraid, but become better at the end. In the text of Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, it says, “His arms felt strong. There was no panic in him. He had looked into the eyes of a whale.” In Confronting a Challenge, it says, “By the end of the season, not only was I part of a winning team, but I also had a new group of friends, including Ben.”
In conclusion, the stories Confronting a Challenge and Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy both have their similarities and differences.

  2. The story Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy has some similarities and differences to Confronting a Challenge. One difference is that Turner was afraid that he wasn’t going to be able to get his friend to safety, but he got power by summoning it from with-in by staring into the eyes of the whales. The text Lizzie Bright states “Even though he was as hungry and thirsty as he had been before the whales , he was not at all as tired.” They are similar because in both stories they have to complete something they are new to, for Turner it is rowing, and for Challenge Boy it is skating. The text Lizzie Bright states “You ever row a boat before? Not until today.” The text Challenge states “I’d been on the ice only a couple of times, when I was much younger.” In Confronting a Challenge he drew courage from a story where explorers went to the arctic which is much colder than Minnesota and also from a figure skater he saw always trying hard. The text challenge states “I read a chapter in my textbook about Rober Peary, a Caucasian man, and Matthew Henson, an African-AMerican, who explore the arctic together in 1909.” Then finally he achieved his goal and was learning how to skate. In the end he was chosen for an ice hockey team, and had new friends including Ben. The text challenge states “I tried out and was chosen for a team.” The themes of both stories are similar because, the theme is that if you overcome your fears and summon power from something, you can transform and change, and accomplish anything.

  3. In the story ,”Confronting a Challenge” and “Lizzie Bright” there are many similarities and differences. In both stories the main characters were scared in the beginning. Turner has never rowed a boat before and he had to take Lizzie back to the Island. Tuner was scared that the boat might capsize. The narrator in “Confronting a Challenge” hurt his wrist skating and was afraid to try skating again. Both characters soon learn to overcome their challenges. The differences between these stories is that the story, Lizzie Bright took place in the past. In ,“Confronting a Challenge” the setting was in present time. The story ,”Lizzie Bright” was in 3rd person. But ”Confronting a Challenge” was in 1st person. This shows that both stories are similar yet different.

There are many similarities between the two stories. One similarity is that they both had to face a challenge. Turner had to row Lizzie to land because she hurt herself and needed help immediately. However Turner had never tried to row a boat so his challenge was to get Lizzie back to land. In the other story the main character moved from Southern California to Minnesota. He liked playing baseball but since it was cold he had to play ice hockey so his challenge was learning to play ice hockey. One difference is they both got their inspiration from somewhere else. Turner got his inspiration to try harder from the whales. The kid from the other story got his inspiration from reading a textbook and watching a girl practice figure skating.

  6. In both the stories “Lizzie Bright” and “Confronting a Challenge” the main characters Turner and the Narrator of “Confronting a Challenge” both are motivated by role models to face their fear. In the passage, “Lizzie Bright” Turner is afraid of trying rowing a boat because he is a beginner but some whales come out and he looks into the eyes of the whale. After that, he finds the strength and motivation within himself to row Lizzie back to shore. In the passage, “Confronting a Challenge” the Narrator is afraid of going back on the ice because in the first lesson he fractured his wrist. The Narrator reads a story about two men going to the arctic in the cold and watches a girl practice figure ice on the way home which helps him find the motivation to practice hockey and ice skating. This motivation helps him find new friends and even get picked for a local hockey team. In conclusion, Turner and the narrator of “Confronting a Challenge” both found the inner strength to fulfill their goals and achievements.

  7. The passages “Lizzie Bright” and “Confronting a Challenge” are both similar, but they also have their differences. In “Lizzie Bright”, a boy named Turner must face the challenge of the sea in order to save his newfound friend, Lizzie, after a terrible accident. At first, Turner was afraid, but after drawing courage from a kind whale, Turner had transformed. He mustered his courage and took Lizzie to safety. Similarly, in “Confronting a Challenge”, the challenge of learning to skate transformed the narrator. He was also scared at first, but he overcame his fear by drawing courage from a school project and a figure skater, much like how Turner overcame his fear in “Lizzie Bright”. Both characters persevered to rise above their challenges. One contrast between “Lizzie Bright” and “Confronting a Challenge” is that the characters had different problems to overcome. Another difference is that they drew courage from different sources. In conclusion, the passages “Lizzie Bright” and “Confronting a Challenge” have many similarities and differences. Maggie

  8. There are many similarities and differences in the stories “Lize Bright” and “Confronting Challenges”, one similarity is that both of the main characters are scared. For example Confronting Challenge the main character is afraid because his friend wants him to play hockey last time he tried to skate he broke his wrist. In the story Lize Bright, Turner was scared that the whales were going to tip over the boat. There are different because in Confronting Challenge it was about how he wouldn't go on the ice then he got courage after he read a book how two people explored the arctic and he got more courage by seeing someone trying to do figure skating. The story Lize Bright is different from the story confronting challenge because Turner was trying to save his best friend by rowing a boat to cross a lake to go back to their island. Derek

  9. There are many differences and similarities in the stories called “Confronting a challenge” and “Lizzy Bright and the Buckminister Boy.” One difference between these two stories is that in the story “Confronting a Challenge” The narrator is has moved to a new home and can’t really do what he wants, like baseball, in Minnesota. However in the story “lizzie Bright and the Buckminister Boy” Turner has to save his friend in his home were both of them lived. Another difference between both of these stories is that in the story “Confronting a Challenge” the main problem in this story is that the narrator wants is afraid to play hockey in his new home, and is even more scared to tell his only friend he has made, that he was afraid to play hockey. He solved this problem by being persistent and never gave up when he tried to play hockey. He got the inspiration to keep going when he read about other people that confronted more difficult challenges than him and decided that he was going to play hocky. In the story “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminister Boy” the main problem is that Lizzy bright is hurt, and her friend Turner doesn’t know how to take her to her home and doesn’t know how to row a boat. This problem was solved when he saw into the eyes of a whale and suddenly got the inner strength and perseverance to keep going. One similarity between these two stories is that both of the main characters pass by many problems that might have made them give up, but they didn’t. The final similarity between these two stories is that both of them had the them or minor theme of perseverance and showed how both of the main characters never gave up in their goals. In conclusion, both of these stories have many differences and similarities.

  11. In the texts “lizzie bright’ and “challenge” the theme is challenges transform people. In “lizzie bright” turner buckminster was afraid he wasn't gonna be able to bring lizzie ( the hurt friend) to where she needs to be before it's too late. A challenge he had to face was that he didn't know how to row the boat, He was also afraid the whales were going to flip their boat over. He looked into the whales eyes and then found his courage.
In “challenges” the narrator was afraid of ice hockey because his first practice he broke his wrist. He went to a pond and saw a girl practice ice skating over and over again until she got the move right. After a couple of days she did! The narrator read a passage about how a caucasion man and mathhew henson explored the antarctic. After these 2 people the narrator went on the ice and kept practicing his turns and how to glide. These 2 stories characters never gave up. The face their challenges and once they accomplished them they they weren't afraid anymore.
Lastly differences. Lizzie was told in 3rd person, told by a narrator. In challenges the story was told in 1st person, told by the main character. Lastly the settings are different. In lizzie the setting was on the coast of Maine. In challenges the setting was in st paul Minnesota.

There are many similarities in the stories,”Lizzie Bright and Confronting a challenge. For examples in the story Lizzie Bright, tuner was lizzie’s friend and he was afraid that the “Whales” were going to tip the boat over. While in the other story,”Confronting a challenge”, the boy was afraid of getting hurt because on his first day of playing ice hockey he fell and broke his wrist. In “Confronting a challenge”, the boy didn’t want anyone to know that his was afraid to skate. In Lizzie Bright, tuner looked into the eyes of the whale and that made him feel stronger and have the strength to get Lizzie help. In “Confronting a challenge” the figure skater made him try over and over again even when he fell because thatÅ› what the figure skater did and she did it. The difference here was that tuner looked into the eyes of the whale and the boy got it from the figure skater and the chapter about explorers.
The themes of both stories is if you overcome your fear you can accomplish more.

  13. In both stories there are many similarities. In both stories a boy is a challenge. Both of the stories the boys are scared of the challenge. Then the boys both receive inspiration. In the end they overcome the challenge and change. In both stories there are also many differences. The differences are that in “Lizzie Bright and the Buck Mininster Boy” the challenge that Turner faces is getting his friend to safety when she is terribly injured. In the other story the narrator is afraid of skating because the last time he tried it, he broke his wrist. Another difference would be that Turner received inspiration from whale. In the story “Confronting a Challenge” a girl that he was trying to ice skate and do a spin in the air. He saw that whenever she fell she would get right back up. Those are the differences and similarities between the two stories.

  14. There are many similarities and differences in the stories. For an example of a similarity they both encounter hard and scary challenges. In the story, ̈Lizzie Bright ̈ Turners challenge is that he needs to row Lizzie to where she needed to be and he had never rowed a boat before so he was scared. In the story, ̈Confronting a Challenge ̈ Narrator Boy broke his wrist while trying to play ice hockey so he is afraid to go back on the ice, so that was his challenge. An example of a difference would be that they both faced very different challenges. In the first text the problem was way more serious because in the second text the Narrator Boy just was to scared to go back on the ice after he broke his wrist. While in the first text, Turner needs to row the dory as fast as he can to get her where she needs to go to save her life. In the end both of these stories have similarities and differences but both Narrator Boy and Turner faced their fears.

  15. In the two stories ``Lizzie Bright’’ and ``Confronting a Challenge’’ there are many similarities and differences, for example, Turner was afraid of one of the whales going to go below the boat and flip it over and in ``Confronting a Challenge’’ the narrator was afraid of the sport hockey because when he tried it the narrator fell and broke their wrist. But in the end they both faced their fears and Turner was no longer afraid of rowing the boat and not making it in time once he looked into the eyes of the whale and the narrator was getting better with hockey and found out it wasn't scary anymore. One difference is that they were afraid of different things, one was hockey and one was rowing the boat and not making it in time.

  16. Giselle,
In the stories “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy” and “Confronting a Challenge” they have some similarities and differences. Tuner and Narrator of challenge both have something in common, Tuner is trying to get Lizzie somewhere and the boy is trying to confront a challenge for ice hockey. They are both trying to solve a challenge so that is a simile in both stories. A difference is that the boy is doing ice hockey and Tuner is riding a boat that is doesn't really use the boat that much so he doesn't know how to use it that much, he is still trying to get Lizzie to her grandads house. In concluding they both have similarities and differences.

  17. There are many similar and difference in the story. He lived in Minnesota then he moved to Arctic. When he moved in Arctic he found a hockey team that he joins. It was his first time playing hockey so he needs practice. When I finished reading I made a pact with myself. The next day I used some money I had earned shoveling snow to buy myself some brand new skates. Instead, every time I went down, I just picked myself up and started over again. During my second lesson, I’d fallen and broken my wrist, and after that , I’d vowed never to put on ice skates again.Edwin

There are many similarities and differences to conforti a change. In the stories Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy and Confronting a challenge. One of the similarities is that they both are scared of doing something. In the story Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster lizzie is scared to ride the bout and in the story Confronting a challenge the boy was scared to play ice hockey in the beginning of the story. Something that is also a challenge is they both have complete a challenge / fear. Also at the end of the story Confronting a challenge they boy says I tried out and was chosen for a team. By the end of the season, not only was I part of the winning team.

  20. In the story Turner did not know how to do something and did his best and made it and also the boy. And Confronting a challenge is first person and Lizzie Bright is third person . They both had motive to keep going in Confronting a challange his motive is a little girl doing figure skating because she kept on falling and she made it and he got courge. And Turner his motive is the whales to get back to shore.Confronting a challnge is better because the story is more interisting and it is first person.

How are the texts, “Confronting a Challenge” and “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy,” similar? How are they different?

Both texts, “Confronting a Challenge” and “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy,” are similar in many ways. One way they are similar is that both main characters have a problem of trying something they have never done. Another thing they have in common is that both stories end when the main characters confront their fears. I know this because in the story,”Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy,” it states, “ ‘You ever row a boat before?’ Turner hesitated. He wondered if being on the swan boats in the Public Garden counted and figured that probably it didn’t. ‘Not hardly.’ ” And, “ His arms felt strong. There was no panic in him.” In the text, “Confronting a Challenge,” it states, “During my second lesson, I’d fallen and broke my wrist, and after that, I’d vowed never to put on ice skates again.” And, “I tried out and was chosen for a team.By the end of the season, not only was I part of a winning team, but I also had a group of friends, including Ben.”

  22. The story “ Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy” and “ Confronting A Challenge” are similar, but they are also different. Both of the characters faced a challenge. Both get inspired and encourages them to try harder. Both also have limited knowledge on how to do what they did. Like Turner, with the small boat , and the narrator with ice skating. Both of the characters are changed, they are different than they were in the beginning of the story. These are the similarities. Now for the differences. In “ Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy”, it shows a more old time period, while in “ Confronting A Challenge”, it seems more modern. They also have a different plot, in “ Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy”, Turner has to row the boat quickly, to get Lizzie to safety because she got injured, while in “ Confronting A Challenge”, the narrator does not know how to ice skate and is ashamed to show it. In “ Confronting A Challenge”, it is a cold climate while in “ Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy “, it is summer, which means it is a hotter climate. Isaac
